Sporting Challenge Funding Award

FBS-Logo2(3)A local charity is celebrating after receiving £150 from the Furness Building Society. The funding is from the Furness 150 Community Giveaway which celebrates 150 years of the building society.

Sporting Challenge have received £150 which will be spent on new Wii equipment and games.

Sporting Challenge is made up of parents and carers who have been providing sporting activities for around 30 people with learning difficulties in West Lancashire since 2008.

They organise evening and weekend activities including ten pin bowling, aerobics, swimming, archery, Wii nights, boccia, kurling, and dance sessions. The classes are a great way for their service users to have fun, make friends and lead an active lifestyle. And they also provide some respite care for their families and carers.

It can be difficult for people with learning difficulties to access sport and exercise activities. Barriers include parents or carers being unable to physically take them and stay with them at classes, and they can also experience physical difficulties with participating in mainstream sport and exercise classes.

John Haggart Chairman and Trustee at Sporting Challenge said: “We are delighted with this very kind donation. It is a wonderful opportunity for Sporting Challenge. We will ask our users for ideas about which games to purchase. Thank you very much on behalf of everyone.”

Edward McCarthy Charity Trustee and Secretary said “We have bought the new games and batteries today which our members will enjoy in the months ahead.”
