Welcome to the Co-op Local Community Fund

The Co-op Local Community Fund helps to support local projects that our members care about. Since its launch in 2017, Co-op members have raised £39 million pounds for over 12,000 local causes. We’re delighted that Sporting Challenge will now be able to access this funding opportunity.

How the fund works

Every time our members shop at the Co-op, 1% of what they spend on Co-op branded products and services helps fund community projects. Members can shop at any Co-op Group stores across the UK to raise money for your cause.

Members can choose which causes to support by signing into their membership account or by calling the membership helpline on 0800 023 4708. Your cause will be available for members to select until November 2019.

Your cause will receive two payments as part of the Local Community Fund. The first payment will be in June 2019 and the last payment in November 2019.

Your cause profile page

Every cause has a page on our membership website. This includes information about your cause and the project you want to complete. To encourage members to support your project, share the following link on social media:

Funding for 2019 Sailing from Active West Lancs

Sporting Challenge have been awarded £200 worth of funding from Active West Lancs.

—‘Active West Lancs’ is a partnership commissioned by Lancashire County Council to deliver a three year programme to improve health and wellbeing across the borough.

—The five partners involved are West Lancashire Borough Council, Skelmersdale Community Food  Initiative, —West Lancs School Sports Partnership, —West Lancs CVS – Community Food Growing and —West Lancs Community Leisure Trust. They offer programmes of early intervention and prevention activities  for physical activity, weight management and obesity prevention.

—They target different sections of the community using local facilities and green spaces. Both medical referral and self referral are possible onto specific courses.

Sporting Challenge, are a group of Parent/Carers who from 2008 have been providing sporting activities for around 55 people with learning disabilities in West Lancashire to keep them fit and healthy. These evening and weekend activities include Ten Pin Bowling, Aerobics, Swimming and Boccia/Kurling at local Sports Centres.

Many people with a learning disability don’t take part in any exercise activity because the family/carers who support them are not motivated or are unable to take them on such activities and they can’t go on their own. We provide Sessional Workers who will collect them from where they live, support the people whilst they are at the sports centres and then return them home after the activities.

Edward McCarthy Sporting Challenge Activities Co-ordinator said: “This is great news and will fund our 2019 evening sailing activities in the future. It is great that Sporting Challenge are involved in this project.”

Ormskirk and Maghull Lions

Sporting Challenge were set up in 2008, they support adults with disabilities to take part in sports and social activities with staff support which gives their families a break.

The Ormskirk and Maghull Lions have kindly awarded the group £100 to help fund their sessions.

Edward McCarthy: “I would like to thank the Ormskirk and Maghull Lions for their generous funding award.”

Lions meet the needs of local communities and the world every day because they share a core belief – to serve their community. Founded in 1917, they are best known for fighting blindness, but we also volunteer for many different kinds of community projects – including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled.

Lions award grants. Since 1968, the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has awarded more than US$700 million in grants to support Lions humanitarian projects around the world.

Lions help during disasters. Together, our Foundation and Lions are helping communities following natural disasters by providing for immediate needs such as food, water, clothing and medical supplies – and aiding in long-term reconstruction.

Lake District Coach Trip

In Saturday the 11th August Sporting Challenge had an enjoyable trip to the Lake District. The group went to Bowness on Windermere.  They went by a Don Fraser Coach from Burscough then Skelmersdale.  Once there the group did some sightseeing, had lunch and then finally had a boat ride on Lake Windermere. Then the group came home. The group had a great day and the weather was sunny.

The day was funded by grants from the Barchester Foundation, Burscough Parish Council, Skelton Bounty and the Lancashire County Council Champion for Youth.

Edward McCarthy: “I would like to thank the funders who made the day possible. The group really enjoyed today.”
