Sporting Challenge

Annual General Meeting

2nd July 2012

Chairman’s Report

Sporting Challenge has continued to build on the success of previous years by increasing the number of activities it provides which now include: Zumba, Dance and Drama, Fitness Training, Swimming and Wii Games.

The funding has come mainly from: Baily Thomas, Co-operative Community Fund, Foyle Foundation and the Big Lottery Fund.

Also a sponsored walk we held in May 2011 raised £800 towards other activities not funded by grants.

Achieving charity status in February 2011 has helped in accessing further funding.

We now have a website which is updated on a regular basis and has links to social networking sites and other organisations

I would like to thank our committee members for their support in the past year especially our Secretary Edward McCarthy and Treasurer Richard Whitehead for their help.

Also I would like to thank the Sessional Workers we engage from West Lancs Positive Living who help support our members together with the staff from Domino Partnerships who now provide some of our activities.

The number of members has continued to grow and the feedback we have from them on how much they enjoy the activities encourages us to continue to provide these opportunities for them to keep fit and healthy, to socialise and make new friends.

Green Shoots Cafe Burscough-Funding

With the regrettable closure of the Green Shoots Café at Burscough Bridge Station some of their remaining funds have been passed on to Sporting Challenge. SKIPTON DONATION HELPS PEOPLE WITH LEARNING
DIFFICULTIES HAVE A LITTLE FUN

Sporting Challenge, a charity based in West Lancashire has been able to buy a much needed kurling golf set thanks to a donation from Skipton’s Southport Branch. The donation will enable the group to introduce more people in the area who have learning difficulties to creative and fun exercise sessions.

Kurling golf is a form of the game kurling, but instead of playing it on ice it can be played indoors. The game consists of between one and nine ‘holes’, with small targets laid around the floor. The objective is for players to try and complete the course in the least strokes.

Sporting Challenge is made up of parents and carers who have been providing sporting activities for around 30 people with learning difficulties in West Lancashire for nearly
three years.

They organise evening and weekend activities including ten pin bowling, aerobics, swimming and now kurling golf. The classes are a great way for their service users to have fun, make friends and lead an active lifestyle. And they also provide some respite care for their families and carers.

It can be difficult for people with learning difficulties to access sport and exercise activities. Barriers include parents or carers being unable to physically take them and stay with them at classes, and they can also experience physical difficulties with participating in mainstream sport and exercise classes.

This is where Sporting Challenge can really help. It provides special workers who can collect participants from where they live and provide much needed support while they are having fun, before dropping them off back home.

Sporting Challenge successfully applied to Skipton’s Community Contribution Award and was awarded £73.98.

Carol Galvin, Branch Manger at Skipton’s Southport branch, visited one of the activity evenings and commented: “I was touched by what I saw when I visited Sporting Challenge, the people there are so inspirational As a mutual building society, Skipton works hard to support the communities where our members live and work, and we’re delighted to offer our support to Sporting Challenge. On behalf of everyone in our branch, I would like to congratulate them on the work they do and wish them every success in the future.”

Chairman of Sporting Challenge, John Haggart said that he was delighted with the donation Sporting Challenge had received from the Skipton as it has enabled us offer more activities for our members. Thank you very much on behalf of everyone.
